The greatest achievers say that in a lifetime of setbacks and comebacks, the truest sense of accomplishment is not found in the realization of the goal, but rather in the will to continue when failure breeds doubt. Here are some examples of people who bounced back after a setback in their lives. One thing they all had in common: they never gave up!
Dr. George Washington Carver was an African-American scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor. Dr. Carver's reputation is based on his research into and promotion of alternative crops to cotton, such as peanuts, soybeans, and sweet potatoes, which also aided nutrition for farm families. Carver was born into slavery in Diamond Grove, Missouri and was kidnapped immediately after birth. However, he had an insatiable desire to learn and walked ten miles every day just to attend school. He relocated many times during his youth. Carver applied to several colleges before being accepted at Highland College in Highland, Kansas. When he arrived, however, he was rejected because of his race.
